About Big Desert
Big Desert is a locality in the Australian state of
Victoria located in the state's west adjoining the
border with South Australia within the local
government areas of the Shire of Hindmarsh, the
Rural City of Mildura and the Shire of West
Wimmera.
The Big Desert Wilderness Park, on the western
border of Victoria, Australia, is the oldest of
Victoria's three wilderness parks. It is also a
locality of the Rural City of Mildura.
These parks are the two biggest of five continuous
reserves which together form the largest remnant
of uncleared native vegetation in the agricultural
areas of south-eastern Australia. One of the most
remote and least disturbed areas in Victoria,
this park protects 142,300 hectares of the Mallee.
Big Desert also adjoins Ninety Mile Desert across
the border in South Australia.
